The body’s lymphatic system is an essential part of our overall immune system. It’s a very open system that allows all particles in. Our lymph nodes are essentially the “security point trash cans” of our body that clean and filter out waste, toxins, bacteria, viruses etc. For a visual of the lymphatic system view this helpful video.
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
It is when a certified lymphatic drainage specialist manually stimulates the system to help the backed up lymph nodes process waste more efficiently. This could be done for various reasons, but the most common are for overall wellness, pre/post surgery, and even for cancer clients.
MLD for Wellness
MLD for overall wellness can help for individuals who have sinus issues, digestives issues, chronic fatigue, autoimmune disorders, inflammation issues, high stress, sleep deprivation etc. MLD is not recommended for acute infections or heart conditions that haven’t been treated or diagnosed. Frequency is subjective to clients situation.
MLD for Pre and Post Surgery
MLD for pre/post surgical procedures is not only highly recommended is it very effective and offers instant relief and quick recovery. Before surgery it’s always a good idea to get an MLD session to ensure your body had rid of current toxins before your procedure for a successful procedure. Post surgical it is an essential part of your recovery. It will reduce normal inflammation that occurs in the body, help the bruising heal quickly, and reduce the severity of scar tissue with each session. With frequent MLD sessions clients will recover faster and get back to their new normal life routine. Frequency is multiple sessions immediately after surgery.
MLD for Oncology
MLD for cancer can aid in helping clients who are currently going through chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal therapy, remission from cancer etc. Clients who’ve had to remove any number of lymph nodes to test for further cancer in the body are highly susceptible to lymphedema due to lymph nodes not being able to regenerate once removed. Removed lymph nodes means the body will have a hard time processing fluid in the body which may cause swelling usually at appendages causing discomfort and pain. MLD will redirect that fluid to the appropriate healthy lymph nodes in the body. Clients currently undergoing treatment for cancer must have doctor approval/current pathology reports to help your therapist create an effective treatment plan. Clients in remission may need to provide the latest pathology reports as well. Frequency varies on the individual client situation.
