Red Light Therapy: What Is It?

Absolutely. Same treatment: formatting cleaned up for WordPress, bullets fixed, headings made consistent, and no copy changes.

More Than Just Red Light

Red Light Therapy has become increasingly visible in recovery, fitness, skin care, and wellness settings, but the name does not fully explain what is happening.

Red Light Therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of visible red and near infrared light to interact with biological tissue.

These wavelengths are not used to tan the skin. Instead, light is delivered at specific wavelengths and doses to influence cellular activity and support the processes involved in normal function and recovery.

One of the most studied areas of photobiomodulation is the interaction between red and near infrared light and the mitochondria, the structures within our cells responsible for producing much of the energy cells use.

In simple terms, Red Light Therapy provides cells with a light based stimulus that can influence how they function, signal, and respond to physical stress.

Why Are Different Wavelengths Used?

Not all light interacts with the body in the same way.

Visible red light tends to interact more strongly with superficial tissues. Near infrared light generally penetrates farther before its intensity decreases.

This is one reason a professional Red Light Therapy system may use several wavelengths rather than relying on a single type of light.

The LumaPod at Frisco Massage Therapy Recovery & Mobility uses five primary red and near infrared wavelengths:

633 nm and 660 nm visible red light
These wavelengths are generally associated with more superficial tissue interaction, including the skin and structures closer to the surface.

810 nm, 850 nm, and 940 nm near infrared light
Near infrared wavelengths can reach farther into tissue and are commonly used in photobiomodulation applications involving muscle, circulation, physical recovery, and deeper tissue structures.

The LumaPod contains 45,000 LEDs and includes 63 preset programs plus customizable options, allowing different light parameters to be used for different recovery and wellness goals.

What About UVB?

The LumaPod also includes a separate short duration UVB wellness spectrum option.

UVB is not simply another red or near infrared wavelength. It interacts with the body differently.

Unlike near infrared light, which can penetrate farther into underlying tissues, UVB acts primarily at the skin. One of its important biological roles is its involvement in the skin’s natural production of vitamin D.

Because UVB has a different biological effect and requires different exposure parameters, it is used separately and for a much shorter duration than the primary red and near infrared Red Light Therapy programs.

We will explore the differences between visible red, near infrared, and UVB light in greater detail in a separate article.

What Happens at the Cellular Level?

Red Light Therapy is more than simply being surrounded by bright red light.

For light to create a biological response, photons must first interact with molecules within tissue.

One of the most studied proposed mechanisms of red and near infrared photobiomodulation involves cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme within the mitochondrial electron transport chain.

That system plays an important role in the production of ATP, the molecule cells use as a major source of usable energy.

Exposure to appropriate wavelengths can influence mitochondrial activity and cellular signaling. Researchers have also studied effects involving nitric oxide, oxidative signaling, circulation, and the processes cells use to respond to physical stress.

This does not mean Red Light Therapy simply “gives your cells energy.”

A better way to understand it is that light can act as a biological signal.

How tissue responds depends on factors including:

  • Wavelength
  • Light intensity
  • Treatment duration
  • Tissue type
  • Distance from the light source
  • The condition and physiological state of the tissue

That is also why more light is not automatically better. Photobiomodulation is dose dependent.

Why Whole Body Red Light Therapy?

Red Light Therapy can be delivered through small targeted devices, panels, handheld systems, and whole body equipment.

The LumaPod provides a different experience by surrounding the body with light rather than treating one small region at a time.

Its 45,000 LEDs provide light exposure around the body throughout the session, creating the 360 degree whole body experience that makes the LumaPod particularly useful within a broader recovery routine.

Most Red Light Therapy sessions at Frisco Massage Therapy Recovery & Mobility take approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

The experience is intentionally simple.

A preset program is selected based on what you want to focus on that day. You lie back, relax, and allow the programmed session to run.

There is no exercise to perform and no hands on treatment involved.

What Can Red Light Therapy Support?

Red Light Therapy has been researched for a wide range of applications, but the strength of evidence is not identical for every goal, condition, wavelength, or treatment protocol.

At Frisco Massage Therapy Recovery & Mobility, we position Red Light Therapy as a recovery and wellness service, rather than treating the LumaPod’s extensive program library as a list of medical promises.

Depending on your goals, Red Light Therapy may fit into a routine focused on areas such as:

  • Muscle recovery
  • Post workout recovery
  • Circulation
  • Physical performance
  • Skin health
  • Cellular function
  • Mobility and general recovery
  • Energy and wellness
  • Consistent recovery between massage appointments

The LumaPod’s preset programming allows the session to be selected according to what you want to support that day rather than expecting every client to use the same light settings.

How Does Red Light Therapy Fit Into Recovery & Mobility?

For more than 15 years, hands on massage therapy has been central to the work we do at Frisco Massage Therapy Recovery & Mobility.

Red Light Therapy does not replace that work.

It gives us another way to support the larger goal of helping our clients feel better and move better.

Massage and Red Light Therapy interact with the body in very different ways.

Massage allows a therapist to work directly with muscular tension, movement restrictions, mobility, tissue response, and the nervous system through skilled hands on care.

Red Light Therapy uses light instead of manual treatment to influence cellular processes associated with function and recovery.

Because those approaches are different, Red Light Therapy can fit into your routine in several ways.

After a massage
Massage has already provided the hands on work. Red Light Therapy can add another 10 to 15 minutes of whole body recovery time without adding more pressure or movement.

After a workout
A Red Light Therapy session can become part of your post workout routine when you want additional time dedicated to muscle recovery, circulation, and physical recovery.

On its own
You do not need a massage appointment to use Red Light Therapy. A short session can stand alone whenever you want the benefits of whole body light therapy without hands on treatment.

As part of your regular routine
Recovery does not have to begin only when something hurts. Some clients may choose Red Light Therapy around harder workouts or massage appointments. Others may incorporate it more consistently as part of an ongoing wellness or recovery routine.

There is no single correct way to use it. It is another tool available when it makes sense for your goals.

Red Light Therapy is now available at Frisco Massage Therapy Recovery & Mobility.

Sessions take approximately 10 to 15 minutes, with preset programs available to help match the session to what you want to focus on that day.
